The world thinks that pop superstar Kiara Anderson has it all, but she spends her nights drinking away memories of her childhood and life as a teen runaway.
The Jacobs family are desperate to see the girl next door again and discover why she ran away, especially their son Shane, who blames himself for her disappearance.
When Kiara’s manager forces her into a reveal-all TV interview she knows the family she loved more than her own will finally discover the truth.
Can she overcome her demons or will the shadows of the past rob her of fame, fortune, and a chance to finally fall in love?
This book caught my attention from the beginning, instead of being a traditional romance it focuses on a girl and the family that looked after her and provided an escape from her everyday life
The story starts in an interview form with the reader learning about Kiara’s life at the same time as the interviewer, although sometimes the reader knows more. The writing style follows in this vein, even after the end of the interview, and this really helped me to keep track of what was going on as there was quite a bit of jumping around which did become a bit confusing!
There was a focus of looking behind the celebrity face that Kiara put on which I think is important, especially given what is going on with the Duchess of Sussex and the relationship with the media at the moment. There are people behind the celebrity and this book looks at that and some of the struggles that Kiara has would I’m sure resonate with other people in those positions. It worked really well in the story and helped me to bond with Kiara
The writing style drew me in and the step away from the traditional romance was interesting but totally suitable for this book. It wouldn’t work properly if more romance was forced and the author realised this and instead focused on family dynamics and throwing in a twist every so often to unbalance the reader!
I would recommend this book to anyone who would enjoy seeing behind the fame of celebrity and what it can do as well as looking further into the important of relationships and blood isn’t always thicker than water in certain situations
