New Year, New Guy by Angela Britnell

Out with the old life, in with the new …

When Laura’s bride-to-be sister, Polly, organises a surprise reunion for her fiancé and his long lost American friend, Laura grudgingly agrees to help keep the secret. And when the plain-spoken, larger-than-life Hunter McQueen steps off the bus in her rainy Devon town and only just squeezes into her tiny car, it confirms that Laura has made a big mistake in going along with her sister’s crazy plan.

But could the tall, handsome man with the Nashville drawl be just what reserved Laura Williams needs to shake up her life and start something new?

This book captured my attention and pulled me in with a lot of emotions being pulled this way and that
Laura is a nurse who has had her struggles with an abusive marriage and is still struggling to live her life how she wants to. She is a very clever person who has a huge amount of development throughout the story which makes her a much better person
The person who develops most however is Hunter, he is still tormented by his past but meeting Laura turns things upside down
I’m not going to lie, if my sister asked me to babysit her fiancés American friend I think I would take it in a similar way that Laura did, total horror, she has to look after him and she agrees, taking him sightseeing and showing him the highlights of Dartmoor before she gets pulled back into work due to staff sickness
This story looks a lot at both Hunter and Laura’s pasts but also brings up questions that make you wonder what you would do in the situation. There are a lot of secrets buried and the way that they look at them and challenge them works really well and makes them as characters stronger
I would recommend this book to those who enjoy stories of huge character development, emotional drama but also characters who you will fall in love with and will be backing
