Allow me to introduce myself.
My name is Tyler Hayes, and I’m a fireman.
Sorry to already disappoint you, but I’m not the person you think I am.
My charming uniform and seductive smile have caused nothing but trouble, and my not-so-honourable reputation, which I used to be so proud of, has kept me away from the one person I wanted to spend the rest of my life baking cookies for; my sweet, beautiful, slightly crazy Miss White.
I guess now I need to tell the whole story.
At forty years old, following years of self-sabotage, I’ve suddenly found myself admitting that I know absolutely nothing. Maybe my friend Niall was right when he told me to accept the process and just grow up. And now it’s too late; I’ll never be able to keep her close to me. All that’s left to do is watch helplessly – but deservedly – as my world comes tumbling down around me.
Tyler is a local fireman and is horrified to learn that the apartment next to his has been rented when he had been assured it wouldn’t be. Things started to change once he met Holly, his new neighbour and a teacher on a 3 month exchange programme
Holly has lost her mother who was her only family and has come to Ireland to escape her normal life and because of something she discovered following her mother’s death. Holly is introduced to the reader as a fiery person who wouldn’t hesitate to hold a knife and threaten a burglar whilst calling the police, even if he claims to be a fireman “believing he smelt smoke”. She is a well written character who knows what she wants but is wary of things because of her past experiences, I think that a lot of us may have a bit of Holly in us
I loved Tyler, he is self assured, has slept with half the town but still becomes determined to change Holly’s mind about him from just a burglar to the person he is. He doesn’t really expect anything that happens and his vulnerability with what is happening made me love him a bit more
This book pulled me in and I was addicted. I really liked the fact that the story was written from the first person for each of them (chapter headings tell you who is talking) which gave me such an insight into what was going on in their heads and why they were reacting in the way that they did which made this book so much more enjoyable to me, especially as a lot seemed to come from Tyler instead of the focus being Holly’s thoughts as he seemed to change more throughout
I would recommend this book to those who enjoy a romance with some amazing characters, who develop so much throughout, who you will adore and how people’s perceptions may not actually be the truth
