From the big city to a little yellow mobile library on the Isle of Skye …
When Jenna Palmer agrees to the new position of mobile librarian on the tiny Arrandale peninsular of the Isle of Skye, she knows she’s signing up for difficult working conditions and mediocre wages. But Jenna needs to get away, and a little yellow mobile library called Buttercup could be her escape to happier dreams …
However, whilst Jenna can get to grips with foggy island roads, local mermaid legends and even big purple monsters, she never expected to have to contend with a boss as grumpy as Daniel McGregor, or a young book lover as enthusiastic as his niece, Katrina.
Arrandale might represent Jenna’s safe port in a storm, but could she and Buttercup also become a beacon of hope to Daniel, Katrina and the entire island community?
Full of drama and overcoming challenges
Jenna has come to the Isle of Skye to escape her abusive ex fiancée and to become the Arrandale area’s new mobile librarian. Daniel is Laid of Arrandale and is determined to bring about change to the area but it doesn’t always make him popular
I liked Jenna, she has had a difficult life but she loves reading and sharing that with those around her especially the children who’s schools she visits in Buttercup, the bright yellow mobile library. She is haunted by her past but the longer she is in Arrandale the more she begins to relax and come out of her shell and I found myself liking her more and more as the book progressed. She felt real to me, like a person I know and like the kind of person that I could have been, with every aspect of her character and I think this both helped to like her and made me cautious of her but her personality shone through making me love her by the end
I totally adored Daniel, he is sceptical about Jenna initially but he starts to warm to her quite quickly and realise that she may be the person who has the power to change his life. Daniel is kind and caring, he is the guardian to his young niece and would do anything to protect her. He doesn’t see the joy in reading but Jenna and his niece start to change his mind. He has been affected by trauma in his past and a part of that is still such an important part of his character that it wasn’t until he started to let things go that he became more relaxed and loveable. He keeps doing things that show how amazing he is and I don’t think it’s surprising that by the end I loved him even more than I had at the beginning
A huge part of this book is the setting and it looks at how a location can influence and change things just from being. The main focus is Mermaid Cove but the whole of the Arrandale area was so vividly described and the atmosphere, the peace but also the drama, came through so strongly that the mention at the end that it is a fictional location made me remember that I couldn’t actually go visit!
Both Daniel and Jenna have had to overcome things and it takes them time to develop into characters I loved and who I didn’t want to let go at the end of the book!
I would recommend this book to those who enjoy a story with huge amounts of character development in such an amazing setting that you will fall in love and be unable to put it down
