The Knight’s Maiden in Disguise by Ella Matthews

The Knight - KMID UK cover

Risking her life

To save a knight!

Disguising herself as her late twin brother keeps Avva Carpenter, and her family, safe. Until Sir William Devereux arrives in her town. As the castle’s stable master, Avva can’t avoid the knight—or the desire he instantly stirs in her. He’s everything she never knew a nobleman could be: honest, kind, brave. When danger surrounds them, the only way to help William is to reveal her true identity, but can she trust him enough?

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Totally brilliant and fabulous
Avva is masquerading as her dead twin brother Aven as the stable master for Baron Caerden and things are thrown up in the air when William, one of the Kings Knights, arrives to inform them of a royal visit but things aren’t what they seem
Avva is pretending to be her brother because of the inherent danger of being a woman near Caerden and pretending to be Aven means that she can be relatively safe whilst also protecting her younger brothers. Avva is strong, determined and brilliant at what she does. She would do almost anything to protect those she cares about even if it puts her in danger, especially as being seen with William does. I loved Avva right from the start, she is an amazing character who I couldn’t help but adore
William is surprised by his attraction when he first meets Avva, believing her to be Aven and he had never liked men before but the more he got to know Avva the more his suspicions about her gender got stronger and he found out her secret. He is one of the Kings Knights but he also has a vulnerable side, he would give his life for the King and very quickly Avva becomes to mean a lot more to him than he expected. William is the kind of person I would want to spend time with, he is loyal, determined and dangerous whist also being so loveable
I totally loved this book, I was hooked right from the very beginning and unable to put it down. Their story is full of danger and drama and each page had me holding my breath and hoping that they would be ok, even if things seemed stacked against them
Both Avva and William know they have no future together, they are from different worlds, but it doesn’t stop them from being drawn to each other and between them they start to realise what is important in their lives, even when reality forces them apart
I was hooked by this book from the first page and I couldn’t put it down. The writing style and the characters drew me in and had me so embedded in the characters lives that I could feel each thing happening as if it was real. As you can probably tell by now, I adored this book and as such I would recommend it to so many people but especially those who enjoy a romance full of danger, drama and friendship that will keep you on your toes and unable to put it down

Her Honourable Mercenary by Nicole Locke

Her Honorable Mercenary-Locke-9781335407351

An innocent maiden

And a legendary warrior

When captured and held prisoner in an enemy castle, Margery of Lyon is guarded by brooding mercenary Evrart, who’s been commanded to watch her—day and night. Margery’s determination to escape brings her closer to Evrart and the kind heart hidden beneath his granite-hard body. Now Margery is torn… Fleeing under the portcullis will mean leaving behind the man she’s falling for…

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Loved it!
Margery has been taken by Ian of Warstone to his fortress as his mistress and she is assigned Evrart, Ian’s personal guard, to protect and guard her
I wasn’t sure about Margery to start with but she very quickly wormed her way into my heart. She is vulnerable and struggles with self confidence, she became a mistress to try and provide for her family but doesn’t know how to do much else. She is fun and playful but with her self doubts she felt a lot like a real person and her personality at times reminded me of me! She is determined but is also aware that she is something that people what to possess and this has coloured her world view and her relationship with Evrart allowed her to see that he liked her for herself and not how she looked which I think was so important for her character
Evrart is huge and is used to people being scared of him so when Margery isn’t it’s a bit of a surprise. He isn’t supposed to be drawn to her but he can’t help it and he risks both punishment and danger when he spends time with her outside of the rooms she is meant to be assigned to. He is strong but also vulnerable, he is good at hiding his feelings and I’m so glad that there were a lot of opportunities to hear things from his point of view so I could understand him a lot better. He is honourable and determined and so many different things combined made me love him from the very start
This book caught my attention right from the beginning and I was hooked. Margery is the sister of Beideluue whose story I had read previously and I loved being able to see the story from a different point of view and that Margery got her own story
This book isn’t a totally traditional romance and I think that drew me in even further. Even though I knew a lot of what happened from Beid’s story, and it can be read independently, there was still so much danger, drama and enough twists and turns that it kept me on my toes
I totally loved this book and would recommend it to so many people but especially those who enjoy a romance with brilliant characters which you won’t be able to put down

Playing the Duke’s Fiancee by Amanda McCabe

PlayingDukesFiancee1

A pretend proposal

For the unconventional heiress

When American heiress Violet Wilkins crosses paths with William, Duke of Charteris, she has extremely low expectations of the “Duke of Bore.” But when this seemingly stuffy aristocrat offers her escape from a dreadful arranged marriage, she leaps at the chance! To her surprise, the arresting Charles whisks Vi into an exhilarating make-believe romance. And as she gets to know the man behind the title, she can’t help wanting more…

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Captured my heart
Violet is an American heiress and has agreed to a fake engagement with William, an English Duke to give them both breathing space from those who want to marry them but will a royal wedding trip to Russia change all that
I loved William, he is kind, funny and bound up in his duty but as he spends more time with Violet he becomes more of himself and allows himself to have fun, to allow his real personality to come out instead of his ducal persona. He knows what he wants but it may not always be exactly what he expected. I really enjoyed seeing him come out of his shell and become a more realistic and rounded person who I always wanted to know more about
Violet is an heiress with a passion for photography and she is living in a time of such change and development into it as an art that I loved to see her exploring and talking to people about her love for photos and that portraits don’t necessarily have to be staged but should instead show a persons individuality. Her joy and passion were what initially drew me to her but her anxieties as well as her happiness made her even more real to me. Her wonder at the Russian palaces and each new experience shone through the story and I was so quickly caught up in her enthusiasm and delight
This book looks at a different part of society, the very top, with the English presentation to the royal family and the close relationships with various royals being something I don’t often read. I also totally loved the Russian wedding element of the story which worked so well and was brilliantly blended with history that it felt so real that I forgot at times that the characters weren’t actually there and I can’t google Violets name and see her pictures! This along with so much has put this book onto my to be read again and again pile
As you can see, I totally loved this book and would recommend it to those who enjoy a historical romance with a difference that will have you hooked from the very first page, desperate to know more

Captivating the Cynical Earl by Catherine Tinley

M&B large file CCE

The cool, aloof earl

And the enchanting lady

For Jack Beresford, Earl of Hawkenden, emotional entanglements are the path to pain. But when his brother brings his new wife and her best friend to his country home, everything changes. Lady Cecily Thornhill is both vibrant and beautiful, and Jack finds himself increasingly captivated by her sunny nature. Yet he must resist her charms, for in a month she’ll be gone—unless his frozen heart thaws before then…

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Full of emotion
Jack is horrified that his brother Tom has gotten married and for love?? He is determined to get rid of Nell so he has his brother back but not everything goes to plan and he accidentally ends up insulting Nells best friend Cecily
I’m not going to lie to you, at the start of the book I totally hated Jack, he was stuck up, arrogant and so determined that his way was the only way but as the story developed and I started to understand more of Jacks character and what drives him, I started to love him. He has been hurt in the past and still carries around a lot of anger as a result of that and it really colours his world view but as Cecily challenges him and makes him look into himself, he starts to see what is important
Cecily was a harder character for me to understand as to start with as I struggled to bond with her but as more of her character came through, her quick wit, clever arguments and brilliant business sense, she became more real to me and I quickly started to adore her, her relationship with Nell also really helped show that she was a lovable character once you had gotten past the exterior
Both Jack and Cecily have been hurt in the past and they need to challenge their demons before they will be free to become the characters that I know they can be. They both struggle at times but they are also headstrong and determined and their arguments made them seem more real to me and had me so wrapped up in the story so quickly that I ignored Jacks faults and really wanted to see what would happen next
I would recommend this book to those who enjoy a story full of emotion and drama with characters who you will quickly come to love, even if they drive you mad at times!

The Housekeeper of Thornhallow Hall by Lotte James

The Housekeeper Cover 9781335407306 - Copy

She arrived as a housekeeper
Will she leave as a countess?
To some, Thornhallow Hall might be tarnished by tales of vengeance and ghosts, but to new housekeeper Rebecca Merrickson it represents independence and peace from her tumultuous past. Until the estate’s owner, William Reid, the disappeared earl, unexpectedly returns… After clashing with him over the changes she’s made to the house, Rebecca slowly unearths the memories that haunt brooding Liam—and her defiance gives way to a shockingly improper attraction to her master!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

One to read again and again

Rebecca is a housekeeper at Thornhallow Hall, a house with a bad reputation which had gone through 21 housekeepers before her. Liam is the Earl but has been gone from Thorhallow for years, the estate having nothing but bad memories for him but can the changes Rebecca makes to the house start to alter that belief
I liked Rebecca, she is hard working and independent, she is determined and stands up for what she believes in. She isn’t perfect but I think that is what made me love her so much, she felt real and I could almost see her standing in front of me
Liam struggles with being back home and with the changes that Rebecca has made to the house but thanks to her he starts to see things come back to life and the bad memories start to be less powerful, allowing in the good ones. He is strong, determined and aware of his position in society but he also likes Rebecca and allows her more leeway than maybe he should at times but through all this I could see that he just needed someone there who would support and understand without judgement. This vulnerability coupled with the rest of his character made me totally love him (after a slightly rocky start) and had me hoping for his HEA
Liam and Rebecca blur the lines between master and servant but it’s their characters and personalities rather than their titles that shine through in their relationship. One thing I did really enjoy with their arguments, neither willing to give in and both fighting for what they believe is right. I will admit that I did often side with Rebecca, mostly because I could understand her point of view and quite quickly Liam would as well!
There are a fabulous supporting cast of characters in this book without who the story just wouldn’t have worked in the way that it does and I think they made me enjoy it even more than I would have done
This book kept me up all night reading because I couldn’t put it down (the traditional one chapter before bed plan…) and I became so entangled in Rebecca and Liams world that it started to feel real to me and I was totally engrossed, desperate to find out what would happen next
I would recommend this book to those who enjoy a book filled with drama and the most amazing characters who you will love as much as I did

The Marquess Next Door by Virginia Heath

The Marquess UK cover

A dashing new neighbour…

Temptation on her doorstep!

To avoid an unwanted suitor at a ball, Hope Brookes asks another gentleman to rescue her. He obliges – with a surprisingly passionate kiss! Revealed as her sinfully handsome new neighbour, Lucius, Marquess of Thundersley, they forge a friendship over their balconies. It’s refreshing that Lucius is more interested in her writer dreams than her looks, so why can’t she stop thinking about that kiss?

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

A totally brilliant must read
Hope is determined to be an author and a chance meeting causes her to push Luke into a fountain (what a fabulous start!) before they end up realising they will be neighbours with adjoining balconies that enable them to learn more about each other
I loved Hope, she is dedicated and always her own person but she struggles with people not taking her seriously because of how she looks. As a result she has a lot of defences in place which can at times cause her problems and I think all of this together make her a brilliant character unwilling to give up on her dreams
Luke doesn’t want to inherit a title but ends up with one anyway and following an incident with his sister in law he winds up living next door to Hope. He is uncomfortable in London as it has too many bad memories for him, it was from London that his mother was taken away to a madhouse and as a result he can be very overprotective. He struggles to adjust to London life and I enjoyed reading about how he starts to understand the responsibilities that come with his title and the impact that he could have. He is a complex character who I very quickly started to adore and each new development made me love him even more
Both Luke and Hope have their own challenges and they change and develop so much over the book as their confidence starts to grow and they learn to be the people they can be
I didn’t know much about mental health care in the 1800’s but hearing what Luke’s mother went through was quite distressing for me and I’m so glad that I could get the types of help that she eventually ends up getting in a more modern method of care. Caring about the person, not just the illness. Mental health is so often glossed over and I think it’s inclusion in this book makes it even more addictive to me
This story drew me in right from the start and as each new twist came along I ended up holding my breath to see how it would affect Luke and Hopes relationship. Their story is full of drama as well as the importance of friends and family who’s lives I became so invested in that I can’t wait for the next book in the series
I would recommend this book to those who enjoy a historical romance with a difference with characters who you will love and a story that will capture your interest straight away and have you unable to put it down

A Marriage Made in Secret by Jenni Fletcher

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Oh my gosh!!
Mathilde is one of the ladies in waiting for Isabella of France, wife of Henry II and in the course of her duties she meets Henry, a spy working for Roger Mortimer and neither of them can forget each other
I loved Henry, he isn’t the traditional gentleman one would find at court and I think this made him more loveable to me. He is clever, calculating and very good at what he does but he also knows what he wants and ultimately it’s to escape the spy game and have a family and I found myself routing for him to achieve his dream
I struggled at times with Mathilde, she is haunted by an event in the past which leads her to become very loyal to the queen and at times blind to her faults which whilst I understood I also found very frustrating, especially as it starts to impact her life more and more. Even through all my issues with her, I found Mathilde to be a kind and loyal person who is determined to keep promises even at the expense of her own happiness. The more I got to know Mathilde the more I struggled with her as a character, I would go from totally loving her to annoyed and back again so quickly but I think that’s part of her character and what makes her her. She starts to learn a lot about herself as the story develops and as each new aspect of her character is revealed I started to love her more and more and by the end I adored her courage and determination as well as so much more
Because of her relationship with Isabella, Mathilde doesn’t always see what is going on and is often blind to the wider events of court and further afield so we must rely on Henry’s narration and version of events to get an accurate picture but this contrast works well and allows the reader to see both sides and how various things can skew a persons understanding of what is really happening
This book is so skilfully written that more than once I forgot it was fiction and went to google Henry and Mathilde as they seemed so real and so entwined with history that it was almost impossible to distinguish between fact and fiction and I think this is a big part of why I loved this book so much
I would recommend this book to those who enjoy a story where the characters have to fight adversity and so much more to be together in a setting that will have you intrigued and wanting to know more

The Return of Her Lost Knight by Melissa Oliver

The Return of Her Lost Knight Cover

Her second chance

With her lost love…

To avoid a forced marriage, Lady Gwenllian plans to escape to a convent. She couldn’t possibly honor another when her heart still belongs to Ralph de Kinnerton, the man she had to betray to save his life—only to hear of his death shortly after. So how is it possible he’s here at this knight’s tournament? Now the pull of their unfinished past forces Gwen to question the choice she’d made for her future…

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Fabulous, brilliant and amazing!
Gwen sent Ralph away years ago and following an incident in France where he nearly lost his life, he faked his own death to stop his cousin Stephen coming after him until he was ready to face him and fight for the return of his lands
I loved Gwen, she is strong and determined but also cautious and nervous. She loved Ralph and finding out he was dead was almost too much for her and in an attempt to escape Stephen she decided to go to a convent as far away as she could in Ireland but first she must attend a knights tournament where she is reunited with Ralph. She must fight her fears and decide if she is going to keep to her plans or as she spends more time with Ralph will she change her mind. Gwen and her struggles felt so real to me and I could almost see her walking round and I became so entangled in her life that I really wanted to help with her decisions
Ralph can’t get Gwen out of his head when he first sees her again and he doesn’t want her to see him but he can’t keep away. He has had a lot of personal struggles following everything that happened in France and these become more pronounced when he returns to England and Gwen. He is a knight and would do anything to protect her whilst also being determined to win the tournament so he can reclaim his lands and his castle. Ralphs struggles come through and I think his determination, loyalty and protectiveness are just a few of the things that made me love him so much
I loved the tournament setting and seeing it from both a spectator and participants point of view made it feel more realistic to me, with a lot of vivid descriptions of life in that setting. Normally I read about tournaments but they aren’t the main focus so I didn’t really understand them as much before I read this book
There is so much danger and drama that runs through the book which had me addicted to the story right from the very first pages and had me wishing that I didn’t have to do other things so I could instead keep reading!
I’m sure you have worked out from this review how much I loved this book so you won’t be surprised to hear that I would recommend it to so many people but especially those who enjoy a historical romance with characters who you will adore and a setting that will capture your attention and have you hearing the clanging of swords as you get pulled into the drama

The Viking Chief’s Marriage Alliance by Lucy Morris

The Viking Chiefs Cover

A challenging wife

For a warrior Viking

When Thorstein Bergson rescues a beautiful woman from a storm-tossed longship he little expects to broker a powerful marriage alliance with her. This high-status ice queen is not the comfortable wife this warrior chief is seeking, but maybe the bittersweet pain in Gyda’s eyes hides another woman beneath? The one he tasted that first night, when she kissed him with such pent-up longing…

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Oh my gosh! Totally fabulous
Gyda has left her home town following the death of her husband and ends up shipwrecked on the shores of England and rescued by local landowner Thorstien and they end up married to each other and Gyda has about 3 months to prove to Thorstien that she can be a good wife otherwise they will get a divorce
Gyda has had a tough life and Thorstien doesn’t make things easy for her but he starts to accept her and the people of his settlement start to really like her, especially when she does things for them. It was hard to get to know Gyda because she was so restrained and controlled but as she became more comfortable she opened up as a character and it meant that more information about her past came to light and I could bond to her a lot easier as I started to understand her and by the end I totally loved her
Thorstien really doesn’t want to be married to Gyda, he thinks she’s rich, motivated by money and shallow and reading from his point of view I could totally see why he thought that but as he starts to get to know her more he realises that some of his assumptions may have been wrong. He has been traumatised by his first wife’s behaviour and because he sees Gyda in a similar light he pushes her away. He is in charge but also kind, thoughtful and loved by the people he rules over and these traits really shine through, especially as he develops more as a character
I loved reading Thorstien and Gydas story, the emotions they, and as a result I, went through felt so real and their determination as well as their struggles shone through and had me captivated
I will admit that I didn’t know much about the Viking way of life but the superb storytelling of this book brought their world alive and had me wanting to know more and as a result I would recommend this book to those who enjoy a historical novel that will pull you in and have your emotions all over the place the further you read

THSS Mills Boon FINAL COVER

Now, as the new Campbell Laird, he must make sure she pays the price for her betrayal. But how can he claim his vengeance if what she says is true…? That her child is his son and heir!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Love, love, loved it!
Fiona and her son William have fled her fathers clan and are on their way to seek refuge with a cousin in a different clan but they must pass through Campbell land and they are captured by the Laird and William’s father Brandon who blames Fiona for her clan attacking his a year ago
I loved Fiona, she is a strong and clever woman who knows what she wants and her overwhelming desire is to protect her son. She is able to fight and the first few chapters had me bursting into laughter when Brandon had a few “oh no”’s before Fiona did something a bit crazy. She must use her wits, skills and intelligence to keep herself safe in Brandon’s castle, most people want her dead because of her perceived betrayal and her personal battles along with her plans and determination had me liking her even more. She is the kind of person I would want to be
Brandon shouldn’t still care for Fiona but as soon as he learns they have a son his main aim is to keep them both safe and acknowledge his son his heir. He didn’t want to be Laird but he was thrust into the position and he does the best he can. It does lead to a lot of personal battles for him where he has to ask what is most important to him and how best to proceed. He is strong and determined, he works with those he trusts and listens to them whilst also making up his own mind. He protects those who are important to him and he goes through a lot to be able to protect William and Fiona, especially when everyone else wants her dead or gone. He is a character who I totally loved and his struggles made him feel more human
This book is filled with so much drama and danger that it had me constantly on my toes and trying to keep up but that is a big part of what I loved so much about it. The characters and the situations they were in had me enthralled and they felt so real, I could almost see and feel the arguments, the fights and the characters play out in front of me. I could so easily imagine the locations that it was almost a bit of a surprise to find out that at least some of them were fictional, which I think shows just how much I was dragged in and captured by their story!
I would recommend this book to those who enjoy a romance that has some brilliant characters, an amazing setting and so much danger and drama that you will be on the edge of your seat and unable to stop reading
